CARMINA SIGN TO REAL WORLD MUSIC PUBLISHING
We are delighted to announce that we have recently signed to Real World Music Publishing and we are promoting our new album 'My Crescent City' with their help. We feel incredibly honoured to be joining their roster, which includes Peter Gabriel's works and a whole host of brilliant music by highly-respected musicians from all over the world. It's been great getting to know the people at Real World Music Publishing - they are a really enlightened group of people with some fantastic ideas about helping their musicians, so we are very much looking forward to working with them. We released an EP of four edited tracks from the new album on June 24th (TwentyThree EP) with the help of Real World and Long Tale Recordings

Review of Carmina EP 'TwentyThree' - Venue Magazine, Bristol
'Acoustic Celtic-jazzers Carmina have a lot up their musical sleeves and this EP is a good showcase for their bag of tricks. The four self-written songs by Pippa Marland and Rob King come from the band's recent 'My Crescent City' album and reflect their established pastoral mysticism, with Marland's voice poised and disarming throughout. Recorded in Dublin, the production - by Irish folk legend Donal Lunny - is rich and lush without being overdone, giving the songs a commercial sheen that might well attract some new fans. This is particularly true of the title track, where Dave Goodier's propulsive double bass and Nic France's elegant drumming give a jazzy drive to the deft saxophone solos and yet still suit excellently the arrival of a traditional Irish reel towards the end. It's a fine, energetic track that deserves a bit of airplay and a wider audience.'
- Four Star Rating (out of Five)

Our new album 'My Crescent City' is now available - Mp3 sales (via iTunes, Napster etc.) also available

Carmina - 'My Crescent City'

In a recent Irish Times interview 'My Crescent City' Producer Donal Lunny describes Carmina's music as "very, very sweet. Very tender. And they're brilliant musicians"

The first published review (on folkforum.nl) of 'My Crescent City' gave it 9+
(English Translation as pdf here)

"Pippa Marland has a real autumn leaf of a voice..
..with a gorgeously rich depth of colour"
8/10 Hot Press

"Whispers of Moving Hearts at their spacious, innovative best, as well as Van during his 'No Guru, No Method, No Teacher' period, infuse this quietly confident set piece. Vocalist Pippa Marland bestows a smoky, languid air to a gathering that boldly takes possession of the iconic 'Lord Franklin', and guest piper Diarmaid Moynihan bores deep beneath the surface of 'TwentyThree (In the Morning)'. The pleasurable maturity of the playing and the sense of ego-free collaboration is a joy to visit and revisit." The Ticket, Irish Times

"Marland's singing is beautiful, her voice clear and true throughout..the quality of the musicianship is extremely high..really beautiful piping interludes..beautiful, harmonious music." Debbie Koritsas, Songlines

"Their very name is a guarantor of the finest music from an eclectic group of musicians. Their latest offering lives up to all expectations"
**** Nottingham Evening Post

==========
'Love Like Angels' is a beautiful CD.
Having drawn inspiration from traditional and Irish music, among others, Carmina have gone on to create a unique and exquisite sound, rooted in their poetry and musical abilities.
If no-one does yearning better than Jackson Browne, then no-one has a smile in their voice like Pippa Marland, it's a voice of steely delicacy.
Perhaps the CD's greatest strength lies in Rob King's production, He has great taste.
From the unrequited love and unsent letters in the title track to the sunshine of 'Mireia', it's a gem.
You really want to know what inspired the thoughts behind Pippa and Rob's songs and are given some clues in the CD notes. Paul McGann, for example, contributed to 'Tom Moody' and his spoken voice melds with Pippa's on this track about the First World War.
Pure serendipity brought me to Carmina and I wanted to pass on my good fortune in finding contemporary music of such diversity and depth.
You'll have little to lose but an awful lot to gain from hearing 'Love Like Angels'
Chris Cosgrave
==========
Excellent single, brilliantly produced and shows Pippa's voice off beautifully.
I'll be playing this and other tracks until the rest of the world wakes up and finds out what it's missing.

I've never heard of them before but I think their music is beautifully haunting and relaxing. I love the marrige between traditional Irish Folk with contemporary jazz. GREAT STUFF!!!! I hope I get the chance to obtain their other CDs at some stage. Please be sure to pass on my thoughts to the band. With many thanks and wishes for a wonderful New Year!!

For years I have been listening again and again to an old tape of Carmina:
'In The Glory Days', and my soul gets wings every time I listen to it,
I feel so connected to your songs...
and so I am happy to have found you in the internet!
I am looking forward to listening to more songs from you...

You will perceive today I am a happy woman; TWO CDs arrived, and filled my car and head with the serenity and vitality of Carmina.
When I got back to my house after running errands, it was an effort to turn off the engine and transfer everything to my house, but well worth it; Carmina Redux is playing as I type. Have you some special power over the Royal and US mail? - they arrived in what seemed to me to be record time; no pun intended!!

After seeing you performing live, I was hooked.
Your music has that 'special ingredient' that so many other bands try to capture, but cannot seem to succeed.
'On a Quiet Street' is just magnificent, it is the product of master craftsmanship.
The songs that you have written are beautifully presented.
Pete's piano sounds so much more poignant in light of his untimely passing.
On the second night of the live recording, I went and offered him my congratulations and told him I thoroughly enjoyed the music. I am very glad that I got to talk to him.
The pipes lend themselves very well to your music fit in beautifully.
Once again, I congratulate you on a masterpiece of musicianship, What a fitting tribute to Pete, and what a wonderful legacy he has left for music lovers of all ages
My very best wishes, Michael

The new album is a joy!
My favourite so far is Franklin. Stunning and what a story
I could go on all night about the album, suffice to say it is another wee masterpiece which you have every right to be proud of

This is such a good album - a well deserved XXXX
I like all the tracks but particularly the soulful sax in 'Bird of Paradise', the meandering sax header and pace of 'Crazy Love' (surely Van would enjoy this version?), the timeless melody of 'Red River Valley Girl' and the gentle, sweet sounds of 'Down to Land' - and doesn't Pete take off in 'Concorde'? and also his lovely piano contribution in 'You turn me on' - 'Mireia' is an unexpected surprise
Pippa's got such a lovely voice

Concorde & Carmina

Rob & Pippa's song 'Concorde' has long been the 'unofficial' Concorde theme song - and now Concorde is made its final scheduled flight on the 24th of Oct.
- three Concordes landed at Heathrow on that day
& Heathrow Air Traffic Control played the song as the planes landed.
A month later, the haunting, serene sound of Carmina's 'Concorde' was played to the huge crowd which gathered to witness a poignant and historic moment as the last operational Concorde touched down for the last time - very fittingly at the aircraft's birthplace, Bristol's Filton Aerodrome.
